Sally Couper is a dinner guest to die for. She's bright, generous, interesting and interested. She's hurdled obstacles, risked everything and tells her story in a thoroughly enchanting manner, littered with laughter and bon mots but overriding everything that makes her such an entertaining dinner guest is her capacity to listen. The ability to tune in to the needs of other people is reflected in her chosen epitaph: I made a difference – for the better! The hurdles she's had to clear have been intensely personal. First there was an alcoholic father who inadvertently fed her negative views of herself then, like night follows day, a marriage to an abusive husband. As a single mother with four children, Sally left New Zealand, the country of her birth, to start life anew in Australia.
